Essential Eight: Backups – Why Proactivity is the Ultimate Defence

Essential Eight: Backups – Why Proactivity is the Ultimate Defence

Introducing the Essential 8

The Essential Eight is a set of mitigation strategies developed by The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) to help organisations safeguard themselves against cyber attacks. Of these eight strategies, there’s one particularly critical as a final line of defence – daily data backups.

Why backups are the backbone of cyber security

Most of us have endured the experience of losing our personal data at one time or another. We’d see our device’s backup call-to-action, tell ourselves we’d “do it tomorrow”, and some time down the track, our device would crash or go missing – taking with it our treasure trove of files.

While losing your personal data can be nothing short of devastating, experiencing the same loss on an organisational scale can bring any company to a grinding halt. The damage caused by corrupted or lost data can be so extensive that most companies with a substantial database will have a daily backup protocol.

Backups are especially important right now, with ransomware attacks posing a real threat to Australian businesses. And something as minor as an employee clicking on a phishing email can be all it takes for a virus to infiltrate your system.

Ensuring your data is safely and securely backed up is the ultimate last line of defence against cyber attacks. It’s a simple, proactive method of ensuring your business will recover quickly in the event of a cyber attack.

But keep in mind – performing routine backups is only half the solution. The quality of your backup measures is equally important.

It’s only a solution if it works

You can religiously action backups, but if your backed up data is incomplete, corrupt, or inaccessible – it amounts to only a brief sigh of relief, followed by more turmoil.

To protect your organisation, you need an ironclad line of defence – but your safeguarding solution also needs to feel be the right fit for your needs and budget.

When it comes to Backup as a Service (BaaS) and data replication, there’s plenty of different options and approaches. We know that the wide range of potential solutions combined with the jargon of cyber security, makes the decision-making process really challenging.

This is why our security experts are here to give you a helping hand. With all leading cyber solutions under one roof, our security experts will help you understand which solution is the right fit for your organisation.
